ARC Artist Spotlight
Own It
September 24: storytelling/performing arts collective Own It
Cultivating a visceral experience of synergy. We are the artists, innovators and shit-starters.
Our goal is to keep listening, questioning and bringing it to the mic.
Organized by Sarah Kappos (poetry) and Phil Millerberg (music).
Own It will be performing in the ARC Livestream Concert on September 26, 7:00pm
ARC Artist Interview
Is this your first time participating in ARC?
Sarah was in the show as a performing artist last year. This is the first year Own It will be represented.
What kind of art do you make/do?
We create curated performing art shows.
How did you get into art?
The creators of Own It are free forms for whom art is a vehicle which carries them up and over life’s waves.
What does your creative process look like?
Well, we sit on the couch and watch disc golf. Then when that gets boring we take it to the porch where we gaze at the western skyline. This combination tends to inspire life out of our collective mouths. Then we go into “The Fort” to record our weekly podcast.
What is your relationship to recovery, and how has your artistic practice influenced that?
It taught us how to tell the truth and “Own It”
Tell us a little about the pieces (songs, poems, dance, etc.) you’ll be performing in the Concert on Saturday night:
The theme is “Land of the Living.” There will be music and spoken word and stuff.
Is there any particular place you draw your inspiration from these days?
Carolyn Myss. The trees that fell down. Our partnership. The performers that put it all on the line for the sake of vulnerability.
We are a collaborative effort. Our show would not happen without all the people who have been to our stage, which is at least 75 performers over the last year and a half.
Any books/tv shows/movies you’re hooked on right now?
Carolyn Myss and as mentioned..Disc golf. oh, and..Planet Earth
Any last words/fun facts/jokes you’d like to share!
-Usually at least one person from each show is in treatment.
-We have hosted 11 Own it shows
-We have recorded 23 podcasts during the pandemic. We release one every Sunday.
